1934 — New York Yankees’ first-baseman Lou Gehrig hit for the cycle in an 11-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. (More info.)
1935 — Joe Louis defeated Primo Carnera in the sixth round of their heavyweight fight at Yankee Stadium in New York. (More info.)
1948 — Joe Louis rallied to knock out Jersey Joe Walcott in 11 rounds at Yankee Stadium in New York to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)
1965 — The NHL board of governors granted six new franchises for the 1967-68 season, doubling the size of the league. The Los Angeles Kings, Oakland Seals, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins were eventually added. (More info.)
1969 — Pancho Gonzalez beat Charles Pasarell in a 112-game, five-hour marathon in the longest Wimbledon match on record. (More info.)
1972 — Bernice Gera umpired a Class A game between the Geneva Rangers and Auburn Phillies to become the first female umpire in pro baseball history. (More info.)
