1912 — New York Giants’ pitcher Rube Marquard defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-1, to win his 19th consecutive decision, a major league record for a single season that still stands. (More info.)

1947 — The Cleveland Indians purchased Larry Doby, who will become the first black player in the American League on July 5. (More info.)
