1909 — Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers hit two inside-the-park home runs in his team’s 7-0 win over the Washington Senators. (More info.)
1923 — Bobby Jones defeated Bobby Cruickshank in an 18-hole playoff to win the U.S. Open golf championship at Inwood Country Club in New York at age 21. (More info.)
1972 — Lee Trevino beat Jack Nicklaus by a stroke to win his second straight British Open title. (More info.)
