A 42-year-old man apparently shot himself when a Meagher County deputy stopped his vehicle after he failed a chemical screening test required as a condition of his bond in a felony DUI case.

The sheriff's office asked the Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation to assist with the investigation.

DCI administrator Bryan Lockerby says the initial indication is that the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but an autopsy is planned.

A deputy spotted the man driving out of White Sulphur Springs Thursday evening, stopped his car and ordered the man out of the car. The deputy and nearby witnesses heard a gunshot from inside the car. The man died at the scene. His name hasn't been released.

Lockerby says the deputy did not fire any shots.
