Stay Cool Missoula: Tips From Disaster Services Director
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - This heat wave is serious business, especially for the elderly, children, and people who work outside.
I spoke with Adriane Beck, Director of the Missoula County Office of Disaster and Emergency Services about what Missoula area residents should keep in mind as we navigate through this stretch of potentially dangerous weather.
“It's important for people to pay attention to their surroundings,” began Beck. “Of course, the forecast does not have a whole lot of relief in sight. The important thing is to stay cool and stay hydrated. Find a cool indoor space if you don't otherwise have access to one in your home. These can be any number of places. You can ride the Mountain Mine bus for free, go to the Missoula Public Library; go to Southgate Mall or other community centers such as our large box stores and grocery stores that all have air conditioning.”
Beck Emphasized Staying 'Cool and Hydrated'
If you do plan to spend time outdoors, Beck has this advice.
“Seek the shade,” she continued. “Find trees or other water sources like the river, or set out a sprinkler and get misted from that. Wear light clothing, take a cool shower, and really try to avoid exerting yourself in the heat of the day. So if you feel like you have to go for a run, maybe make it in the early morning or late evening after, after it's cooled off a little bit.”
Beck Promoted the 'Stay Cool Missoula' Tool Kit
Beck said Missoula County has developed an online ‘tool kit’ to beat the heat.
“Visit Climate Ready Missoula.org., she said. “People can go there and take a look at a new ‘Stay Cool Missoula toolkit’ that was developed specifically for Missoula, with lots of information in there about what to look for to recognize heat stroke, heat exhaustion, but also ideas of ways that they can beat the heat.”
She said the website is helpful for keeping track of the weather, as well.
