On May 28, 2022, at approximately 5:11 p.m., Missoula Police Department officers were called to a report of a male with a stab wound on the premises of Missoula Fresh Market on Reserve. Officers responded and located the male laying on his side in a grassy area on the north end of the parking lot.

The victim was holding a towel to the lower right side of his stomach and there was a group of people surrounding him. Officers asked the victim what happened and he told them he had been stabbed by 37-year-old Ryan Charlo approximately two hours prior. According to the victim, the knife Charlo used to stab him was a leather buck serrated knife generally used to cut fish. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold explains.

“On scene, the victim male was able to tell officers who had stabbed him and where the stabbing had taken place,” Arnold said. “Fire and medical responded and took over care for the victim where he was transported to a local hospital. Officers went to the residence where the crime had taken place and where the suspect, Ryan Charlo, was suspected of being. As officers created a perimeter around the house, an officer watched a vehicle make an abrupt U-turn after seeing officers in front of the residence.”

Officers gave pursuit, following the vehicle until it came to a dead-end street on W. Foothills Drive. Despite the dead-end, the vehicle continued off-road into a park, driving through the park until it was able to rejoin the road at Highwood Drive.

“Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop,” Arnold said. “The vehicle did not yield to the officers. Officers pursued the vehicle based on the severity of the crime. When the vehicle came to a stop, the officers were able to positively identify the suspect Ryan Charlo. Charlo was uncooperative with officers. Officers were able to take Charlo into custody and he was transported to the Missoula County Detention Center.”

Court documents indicate Charlo alternatingly complied with and refused officer commands, sometimes placing his hands up and other times dropping them towards his waist. Officers attempted to place Charlo into custody, but he actively resisted, attempting to stand up and pull his left arm away from officer attempts to handcuff him.

Charlo is currently being charged with felony assault with a weapon and resisting arrest.
