South Carolina Politician Tears Up Asking for Confederate Flag’s Removal
The issue over whether South Carolina should remove the Confederate flag from the state capitol has been front and center since last month's mass shooting in Charleston.
Rep. Jenny Horne delivered a moving and tear-filled speech on Wednesday, scolding her colleagues who have introduced amendments that would merely postpone any action being taken when it comes to removing the flag.
Horne, a Republican, was shaking as she said, "I cannot believe that we do not have the heart in this body to do something meaningful, such as take a symbol of hate off these grounds on Friday."
She also said, "If we amend this bill, we are telling the people of Charleston we don't care about you." As for the people who defend the flag and the history associated with it, she said, "I'm sorry, I have heard enough about heritage."
Horne's impassioned speech paid off, as early Thursday morning the South Carolina House voted to remove the flag. Governor Nikki Haley is expected to sign the bill and the flag will come down shortly after that.
