On October 2nd, United States District Judge Charles Lovell struck down Montana campaign contribution limits as unconstitutional. Two days later, the Montana Republican Party raised $500,000 and donated the amount to the Rick Hill for Governor campaign.

On October 8th, the 9th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the campaign contribution limits, but not before the donation was made to the Hill campaign.

Chairman of the Montana Republican Party Will Deschamps says the donation was perfectly legal, and he expects it to stand, despite what James Murray, the state Commissioner of Political Practices may decide.

Deschamps says he does not know if the Hill campaign has cashed the $500,000 check. A call to Hill's campaign headquarters has not yet been returned.
