A man in his 50's is dead after losing control of his vehicle on Highway 200 not far from the Paws Up Ranch, east of Missoula.

Montana Highway Patrol trooper Shawn Silvan said the accident happened at about 10:00 a.m. Sunday at mile marker 26 on Highway 200.

"A Suburban-type SUV was traveling westbound on Highway 200 near the Paws Up Ranch," Silvan said. "The vehicle ended up leaving the roadway on the right side olf the road, hit a guardrail and then slid down the guardrail and ended up off the embankment as it went towards the river. The very back end tire of the vehicle ended up in the river."

According to trooper Silvan, the victim was in his 50's and was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. He said the investigation is ongoing, but at the time of this report, neither alcohol nor speed were considered to be factors in  the fatal accident.

The man's name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
