The University of Montana Foundation's Beth Hammock says Giese comes to Montana from a similar position at Kansas State University. Giese also served as associate vice president for campaign initiatives and associate vice president for development for the University of Oregon from 2006 to 2011.

Before his service in Oregon, Giese worked for 16 years in various capacities with Washington State University in Pullman.

According to a news release from University of Montana Relations,

"The University of Montana Foundation is a nonprofit entity governed by a 40-member board of trustees. Its mission is to ensure the University’s excellence, access and affordability through a public/private partnership. As president and CEO, Giese will lead the daily activities of the Foundation, serve on President Royce Engstrom’s cabinet and serve as the chief development officer of the University."

Laura Brehm, current president and CEO, has led the UM Foundation since 2003. She will retire from her role March 31 to work as a development consultant to nonprofit organizations and universities.
