Wildlife officials are asking for the public's helping in finding the person who shot and killed a cow moose north of Butte.

Game wardens with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks say the dead moose was found near Maney Lake in the Elk Park area Wednesday. It had been shot in the chest, and its carcass was left to rot.

The moose, whose calf was found nearby and unharmed, was identified by an ear tag as a cow that had been moved from a location in Butte in 2010.

There are no cow moose hunting permits in the area where the carcass was found.
