After three consecutive losses, the team was ready to take out its frustrations on an inferior opponent.

The Cal Poly Mustangs meekly obliged, as the Montana Grizzly football team jumped  out to a 17-0 lead just one minute into the second quarter. By then, there was no stopping the Montana avalanche of points, and the Griz went on to trounce the Mustangs 57-0 in a snow-covered Washington-Grizzly Stadium Saturday night. Mother Nature timed it well, as the snow did not seriously start to fall until kickoff, and hardly ever let up the entire duration of the game.

It was a complete team effort, as the Griz D refused to let Cal Poly, the third most prolific  passing team in the nation, put any points on the board. Quarterback Lucas Johnson was sharp through the air with three touchdown passes and ran for another score. But the brightest star on offense was running back Nick Ostmo who rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first 100-plus yard game in his career.

With the win, Montana shakes off some of the anguish of three consecutive losses to teams all ranked in the top 25, Idaho, Sacramento State and Weber State. The Griz improve to 6-3 on the season. Tonight's victim, Cal Poly, has only one victory this season and put up little resistance.

But a lopsided dominating victory like this needs to have a training effect and be a confidence-building springboard for the two regular season games. The next one of those is the final home game of the year, when the Griz host arch rival Eastern Washington next Saturday, November 12, at 1:00 p.m.
