This reporter received an email from the Montana Democratic Party on Thursday asking people to sign a petition to keep Representative-Elect Greg Gianforte from being allowed to take his seat in Congress until his assault charges has been settled.

Below, find the body of the email message:

Peter,

We were all shocked when Greg Gianforte attacked a reporter before last week’s special election.

Losing his temper. Out-of-control. If that’s how Greg Gianforte acts as a candidate – how will he behave as a member of Congress?

Until his assault charges are settled, Greg Gianforte should not be allowed to take his seat in Congress. If you agree, we need you to stand with us.

Demand Congress refuse to seat Greg Gianforte until his assault charges are resolved. We need 5,000 signatures to show people do not want Gianforte seated until his assault charges are settled.

Greg Gianforte is already an embarrassment to Montanans. His actions are disturbing – and raise serious questions about his fitness to serve in Congress.

Until the assault charges against Gianforte are fully answered, he should not be seated in Congress. Add your name here if you agree.

Thanks for taking action,

Montana Democrats

Neither the Montana Democratic nor Republican parties have any official say in whether Gianforte may or may not be sworn in. A former Republican state official said Gianforte had not been sworn in as of Thursday.

KGVO News has reached out to State Democratic Chairwoman Nancy Keenan, but the call has not yet been returned.
