Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On January 19, 2026, Governor Greg Gianforte recognized Dawn Bauer with his Spirit of Montana award for her commitment to Superior Elementary School and to serving others during the recent severe windstorm that impacted the community.

“Service is at the heart of who we are as Montanans,” said Gianforte. “Dawn’s quiet leadership and unwavering commitment to students, families, and her community reflect the very best of Montana. In good times and bad, she always steps up to care for her neighbors.

During a ceremony held at Superior Schools, and joined by students, teachers, and local leaders, Gianforte presented Bauer with a certificate and a flag flown over the State Capitol in her honor and shared the story of why she was nominated.

“This community always shows up for one another, especially when times are tough,” Bauer said. “Everything we do is about making sure our students and families feel supported, cared for, and valued. I’m grateful to work alongside people who are always willing to step in and help.”

In December, a major wind event impacted nearly every county in Montana with significant damage occurring across the state. In Superior, widespread power outages led to the support of an American Red Cross shelter that helped provide food, water, and a place to stay for Montanans in need. At the shelter, community members and volunteers like Dawn helped provide dinners for over 250 residents.

In recent years, Dawn has helped secure funding to establish a greenhouse where students learn to grow and harvest food, a freezer and heated dry storage space for food supplies as well as a dehydrator and vacuum storage system. During the power outage in Superior, many of these supplies were used to help serve the community.

In addition to Dawn’s work to establish the greenhouse and food storage, she’s also helped to secure grant funding to establish and operate an in-school daycare facility for educators and staff. Outside of her role as an administrative secretary for Superior Schools, Dawn also helps to pack food for students who need extra support on weekends, mends torn jackets, and leads clothing drives to help ensure every child has what they need.

The governor’s Spirit of Montana award recognizes Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Montanans may nominate members of their community for the award here.
