Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - The Montana Department of Health and Human Services (DPHHS) urges all consumers not to purchase and to immediately throw out all Diamond Schruumz brand products after illnesses associated with those products have been reported.

On Friday, I spoke with Public Health Physician Dr. Maggie Cook-Shimanek about the order from DPHHS.

DPHHS Urges Montana Consumers to Throw Out All Diamond Shruumz Products

“The products that we're referring to specifically were referenced in the FDA and CDC communications earlier this week, and it's a brand name, Diamond Shruumz, including chocolate bars, cones and gummie products,” began Dr. Cook-Shimanek. “The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have received reports of severe acute illness following consumption of these products, and that was reported to poison control centers across the United States.”

Dr. Cook-Shimanek said many have become ill by ingesting these products, but thankfully, no deaths have yet been reported.

“As of June 11, there were 12 illnesses that had been reported and 10 hospitalizations in eight states, and there is an ongoing effort to identify other cases, which was the basis for the CDC and FDA communications,” she said. “Several of those patients have required intubation, mechanical ventilation and admission to the intensive care unit, although none have died so far.”

There are Serious Symptoms After Consuming These Products

She described some of the more serious symptoms that can occur when those products are consumed.

“Some of the things that have been reported to the poison center are seizures, muscle rigidity, tremors, abnormal heart rates, abnormal blood pressure, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, so a host of symptoms, and some of them quite serious,” she said.

Dr. Cook-Shminek had some final words for Missoula and Western Montana consumers.

“Consumers should not eat, sell or serve any flavors of this Diamond Shruumz brand chocolate bars, cones or gummies, and they should discard those products that have been purchased,” she said. “If you know of anybody who has purchased these products, and you can see a picture of them on the FDA website, you should encourage those people to also discard those products immediately as well.”

Anyone who may have consumed these products and have become ill, call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222, or contact their health care provider.
