Missoulians Respond to Stanford Rape Case
Recently Brock Turner, a former Stanford swimmer, was sentenced to six months in jail after being convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. At Turner's sentencing, his victim decided to read a letter she wrote describing the impact the assault had on her back in January 2015. If you haven't already, you can read the full letter thanks to Buzzfeed. Please be warned, it is very intense and emotional, and it took me a few tries to read the letter in its entirety.
Sexual assault cases and news stories aren't unfamiliar to many Missoulians. To me, it seems to be one of the most prevalent media stories you'll find as you scan headlines nowadays. After this story broke, critics everywhere went wild in defense of the victim, claiming the judge's sentence was far too lenient.
We reached out to the local community, and found that many Missoulians agree.
"How dare this kid get such a short sentence... Yeah let's talk about his talents and how great of a swimmer he is and how negatively such a long sentence would impact his life. It is utter BS and I couldn't be more disappointed in the attorney and judge in this case. What he has done is inexcusable and he has caused so much hurt not only for the victim obviously, but for anyone who has been sexually assaulted or knows someone who has. His conviction isn't enough and he deserves every one of those fourteen years he should've gotten." - Kaitlin H.
"There's no fixing that kind of mentality. You rape someone, you die. End of story." - Christian S.
"There is no such thing as consensual sex and sex. It's either rape, or sex," - Johanna W.
"I want the judge to know that he ignited a tiny fire," Turner's victim told Buzzfeed. "If anything, this is a reason for all of us to speak even louder."
We agree.
