On a separate note, MPD has been made aware of an alarming increase in phone scams targeting members of our community. Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett said individuals are receiving calls from scammers posing as law enforcement officers, either from the police department or sheriff's office.

“These scammers are falsely claiming that individuals have failed to appear for jury duty or have outstanding warrants, and they are demanding payment to prevent imminent arrest,” Bennett said. “This is a despicable attempt to exploit and intimidate innocent people. We want to reassure everyone that neither the police department nor the sheriff's office will ever call and demand payment for alleged warrants over the phone.”

If you receive such a call, Bennett said not to engage with the caller and hang up immediately.

“If you have any doubts or concerns about the legitimacy of a call regarding warrants or any other legal matters, please don't hesitate to reach out to us,” Bennett said. “You can contact the non-emergency line at (406) 552-6300. Our team is here to help and address any questions or concerns you may have.”

MPD wants us to spread the word and stay vigilant.
