What to Expect From Missoula’s New Fire Assistant Chief
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 6, 2025, Missoula Fire Chief Gordy Hughes, along with the members of the Missoula Fire Department and the City of Missoula’s Senior Leadership, announced and welcomed John Petroff as the newest member of the Fire Department’s Chief Staff.
According to Administrative Support Charity Stubb, Petroff has been appointed to the position of Assistant Chief of Administration, bringing with him nearly two decades of experience and unwavering commitment to firefighter health, wellness, and operational excellence.
“Originally from Eastern Montana, Petroff began his journey in fire service after earning an Associate of Applied Science in Fire and Rescue from the University of Montana—Helena College of Technology,” Stubb said. “He began his professional career with Miles City Fire and Rescue, serving for two years before joining the Missoula Fire Department (MFD) in 2007. Over the next 14 years, Petroff worked in MFD’s Operations Division, where he responded to emergency calls and honed his skills under the guidance of experienced Senior Firefighters and Captains.”

Stubb said his dedication to excellence and service to the community has been a hallmark of his career.
“In 2021, Petroff transitioned to a leadership role as Head of the Health and Wellness Division,” Stubb said. “In this capacity, he played a pivotal role supporting the Mobile Support Team (MST), Peer Support Team, and Peer Fitness Team—contributing significantly to the safety, wellness, and mental health of MFD personnel.”
Petroff aims to continue that supportive mission.
“My goal in this new role is to support the Firefighters, Mobile Support Team, and the entire Missoula Fire Department staff behind the scenes, so they can carry out our mission: Save lives, protect property, ease pain and suffering,” said Petroff.
