Missoula Montana Airport Celebrates Record-Breaking 2024
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On December 20, 2024, the Missoula Montana Airport was thrilled to announce several major milestones as the year drew to a close, including breaking its annual passenger record and welcoming the one-millionth passenger through the terminal. Airport Director Brian Ellestad has the details.
“MSO will surpass one million arriving and departing passengers before the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s history,” Ellestad said. “The achievement underscores the airport’s growing importance as a gateway for Western Montana. MSO is hosting a special celebration this afternoon to commemorate this remarkable achievement.”
Ellestad said one lucky passenger will be recognized by MSO as the millionth traveler, receiving a gift basket and one year of free parking.
“This is a historic moment for MSO and our community,” said Ellestad. “Reaching one million passengers reflects the trust and support of our travelers, the dedication of our airline partners, and the strength of the region’s economy. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone with our passengers and staff who make this possible.”
Record-Breaking Year: 2024 Marks Highest Passenger Volumes in Airport History
In recent years, Ellestad said MSO has demonstrated remarkable growth in passenger traffic, consistently breaking records.
“MSO achieved a record in 2023, with 913,198 passengers served,” Ellestad said. “Now, in 2024, the airport is on track to surpass over a million total passengers, marking another record year of growth and highlighting its ongoing role in driving air service expansion and connectivity for Montana.”

Expanded Air Service in 2024
Earlier this year, MSO proudly welcomed the return of ultra-low-cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, offering nonstop service to Denver with low-fare connections beyond.
“Additionally, ultra-low-cost carrier Sun Country Airlines launched nonstop service to Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), providing another budget-friendly travel option,” Ellestad said. “These new additions helped drive MSO’s passenger growth and continued to put downward pressure on airfare. These new services are a direct response to the growing demand for more travel options in and out of Missoula. We’re excited to provide our passengers with even more affordable opportunities to connect with major destinations.”
$875,000 Grant to Support Chicago Service Expansion
This fall, Ellestad said the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded MSO an $875,000 Small Community Air Service Development Program grant to support the expansion of what had been a summer-only seasonal Chicago service to year-round service.
“Currently, both American Airlines and United Airlines offer seasonal flights to Chicago, and this funding will support transitioning to a consistent, year-round schedule,” Ellestad said. “Year-round service to Chicago is vital for enhancing connectivity to the Midwest, East Coast, and international markets. This grant is a game-changer for our community. Year-round service to Chicago will provide more efficient connections for travelers while boosting regional economic opportunities.”
Ellestad said they’re grateful for the federal and local partnerships that made this possible.
