Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On June 26, 2025, the Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) was pleased to announce a new year-round nonstop service to Chicago. Starting December 18, 2025, American Airlines will offer trips to O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

According to Airport Director Brian Ellestad, this new route is a part of a regional initiative to improve air service, lower airfare costs, and enhance schedule efficiency for business and leisure travelers.

"We’re incredibly grateful to our community for the support that helped secure this grant and make year-round service to Chicago O’Hare a reality,” said Deb Poteet, Chair of the Missoula Montana Airport Board. “This added service strengthens one of Missoula’s most important markets—bringing more options, better connections, and greater convenience for travelers across our region."

New Flight is a "Game-Changer"

Ellestad said nonstop service to Chicago addresses previous challenges in accessing major international and east coast markets, including New York City and Boston, in addition to tourism hotspots in the Southeast such as Orlando. He said these destinations are key for both leisure and business/government-related travel.

“A year-round flight to Chicago is a game-changer for Missoula’s economy. It strengthens our connection to major markets in the eastern U.S. and internationally, giving local businesses greater access to clients, capital, and talent,” said Grant Kier, President and CEO of Missoula Economic Partnership. “This success reflects the strength of our community partnerships and a shared focus on long-term economic growth.”

Ellestad said the route is the result of the Take Flight Missoula initiative.

“Take Flight Missoula’s mission has focused on strengthening rural connectivity and maintaining competitive service,” Ellestad said. “MSO is the primary airport for multiple rural counties and communities, with over half of its passengers traveling in from outside the city limits. Efficient, affordable access to national markets like ORD is vital for tourism and economic growth in these areas.”

Making Missoula More Competitive

Ellestad said this new route boosts Missoula’s economic competitiveness by expanding market access for local businesses and making the region more attractive for corporate investment.

“Tourism officials highlighted the need to improve accessibility in Montana,” Ellestad said. “They believe making it easier to access attractions, places to stay, and transportation will help position Montana as a more desirable destination.”

Ellestad said the service is expected to benefit small business owners, corporate travelers, and families, by creating more efficient routing and ultimately lowering airfare.

“Expanded air service is a win for everyone—from visitors discovering our vibrant communities and stunning landscapes to residents gaining greater access to national and international travel opportunities,” said Racene Friede, President and CEO of Glacier Country Tourism. “New daily flights between Missoula and Chicago strengthen the vital connections that drive economic growth, support small businesses, and enhance quality of life. This kind of development is essential for ensuring that Montana remains accessible, competitive, and welcoming year-round.”

The daily nonstop route to Chicago will be available to book at aa.com or American’s mobile app starting June 30.
