Missoula Man Interferes With Death Investigation, Had Meth on Him
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - During the late night hours of February 22, 2025, and early morning hours of February 23, Missoula Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Cooley Street for a report of an unattended death investigation. An officer was tasked with maintaining the scene log and scene security. He was inside the residence at this time and there were three marked police vehicles parked directly in front of the residence.
While briefing an Evidence Technician, the officer heard rapid footsteps approaching the residence and climbing the stairs. The officer noted the footsteps appeared to indicate an individual sprinting. The officer looked at the front door and observed a male, later identified as 26-year-old Calen Hengel, sprint into the apartment while screaming loudly.
The officer observed a bulge in Hengel’s front pocket. The officer did not know who Hengel was at this point. Other officers diverted their attention to the initial investigation to assist the officer with the male. Hengel was placed into handcuffs and escorted off the property.
According to court documents, officers arrested Hengel for obstructing a death investigation as his actions caused multiple officers to divert their attention from the investigation and delayed officers’ progress during the investigation. While outside, Hengel was manic, yelling, and would not stop fidgeting. The officer recalled a family member stating Hengel was a methamphetamine user.
The officer observed Hengel’s behavior was consistent with stimulant use. Hengel responded to his eyes being introduced to light stating something to the effect of “It’s not illegal to be high.”

Detectives on scene requested Hengel be transported to the Police Station for an interview regarding the death investigation. This interview was conducted and Hengel was remanded to the jail for felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs, criminal possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing a peace officer.
