Mineral County Sheriff Tom Bauer says one of his deputies shot and killed a man who ignored orders to stop his vehicle and instead swerved toward the officer.

Bauer says the incident occurred around 9 p.m. Friday near the county fairgrounds where hundreds of people were attending a rodeo and other entertainment.

He says the incident began when a deputy found a man who appeared to be highly intoxicated and in the driver's seat of an SUV. When confronted the man sped down an alley where a second deputy shot him.

Bauer says the deputy who shot the driver has been placed on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.

He declined to release the names of the deputies involved or any further details about the man who was killed.
