Lessons Learned From Glacier Park Hiker Rescue [YouTube]
When two lost hikers were rescued earlier this week in Glacier National Park, officials said it was their own preparations that led to the successful resolution of the incident.
Public Relations Specialist Katie Liming said hiking in Glacier Park requires special preparations.
"The two hikers who were missing and then recovered were well prepared," Liming said. "They had given their itineraries to family and friends, they had proper footwear, enough water and food supplies. They had accurate maps and were ready to hike. Unfortunately, they ran into some bad weather, so being prepared is very important when you park in Glacier Park."
Both of the young woman had fallen down a rocky hillside, and sustained leg injuries, so their proper preparations helped to save their lives.
Liming said there are resources available to anyone wanting to hike or camp in Glacier on the park's website.
On our website we do have hiking forms where you can write down your hiking plans, telling people where you plan to go hiking, when you plan to leave and when you plan to return," she said. "If something were to happen, rescue officials would have a huge head start in trying to find you."
Liming said park officials were able to supply some initial treatment for both women to help stabilize them, and then EMT's were able to hoist the women into a helicopter provided by Two Bear Air and then transport the hikers to a nearby hospital for treatment,
Their current condition is unknown.
