Controversial K-E Diet Promises Brides Extreme Weight Loss Via Feeding Tube — Is It Safe?
All brides-to-be want to look great on their wedding day, but some are taking this to the extreme with a controversial new diet that involves a feeding tube to promote rapid weight loss.
Called the K-E Diet, the plan promises that brides will shed 20 pounds in 10 days by inserting a tube through the nose that runs to the stomach. Dieters are fed a slow drip of protein, fat and water totaling 800 calories a day, and body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis.
“It is a hunger-free, effective way of dieting,” said Dr. Oliver Di Pietro, who created the plan. “Within a few hours your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are actually not hungry at all for the whole 10 days. That’s what is so amazing about this diet.”
But, according to some critics, crash dieting like this can dangerous to one’s health and often doesn’t result in permanent weight loss. Indeed, Di Pietro warns that people with kidney issues should avoid the diet altogether.
Still, for one woman, Jessica Schnaider, the plan allowed her to quickly drop 10 pounds in just eight days. She was never hungry while dieting, she said, but she did suffer from fatigue.
“I was tired. I didn’t feel like exercising,” said Schnaider. “The doctor told me that if you can complement with walking for a half an hour on the beach, that would be great, but I didn’t feel like doing that. I’m a very energetic person, but those days I was a little tired.”
Other side effects may include bad breath and constipation since the feeding solution contains no fiber. The 10-day plan itself runs at a cost of $1,500.
