From time to time I love treating myself to a fancy, tasty cocktail. Typically, I'll order a beer if I'm out for dinner or meeting friends, but I'll order a fancy Montgomery Distillery-like drink once in a blue moon (not the beer). Or a simple vodka soda, Old Fashioned or a Moscow Mule works, too.

The website Coffeeness embarked on a cocktail-fueled research project to discover the most popular cocktails in the United States and each individual state. Coffeeness' team gathered online data and Google analytics to look at "Google search volume data for each cocktail by state." Montana's favorite cocktail is a co-championship.

Montana loves Moscow Mules & Old Fashioneds

Montana was a split decision between Moscow Mules and Old Fashioneds. In its copper mug, the Mule carries a punch with vodka,  ginger beer, lime juice and some mint. An Old Fashioned consists of whiskey, bitters, orange and cherry garnishes. Both are phenomenal drinks.

Moscow Mules were very popular out West. The ginger beer drink won the crown in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Montana. Alaska and Wisconsin also loved the Moscow Mule. That being said, in true Wisconsin form they had a four-way tie for most popular between Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule, Mimosa and Margarita.

Surprisingly the most popular drink on average across the country was an Aperol Spritz. I have never ordered a Spritz at a bar. It was the favorite drink in 22 states.

Other states' favorite drinks included Mai Tais, Mojitos, Bellinis, Daiquiries and something called Sidecars. I had to look up what a Sidecar is. If you're like me, it's brandy, cognac, lemon juice and triple sec.
