It has a rather comical connotation to it, but the effects and consequences can be pretty disturbing.

So, if you don't have enough in your life to be losing sleep over, check out where Montana apparently ranks in those who sleep but can't stay in bed while they are doing it. Either that, or Montanans just like Googling really big words.

Seriously, the marketing agency Connective 3 has done a deep dive into the condition known as somnambulism, much better known as sleepwalking. The research indicates that sleepwalking affects over 4% of adults. So it's easy to see why there is an average of 128,000 monthly internet searches for it every month in the United States.

SO, WHICH STATES SUFFER THE MOST FROM THIS NIGHTTIME PHENOMENON?

Rest easy, Montana. No, wait, that didn't sound right. What we're trying to point out is that, while ranked high, we are not at the head of the bed.

According to the experts at MattressNextDay, Wyoming tops the list with a significantly high rate of 364.15 internet searches per 10,000 residents. Vermont closely follows with 357.87 searches per 10,000 residents. Rounding out the top three is North Dakota with 307.46 searches per 10,000 residents.

Montana comes in at Number 8, with 243.26 searches per 10,000 residents.

The research includes insights from Amy Graham, a longtime sleepwalker. Her personal  experiences offer insights and tips to reduce somnambulism and stay safer at night.

IT'S A LOT OF BASIC, COMMON-SENSE THINGS

>Reduce TV and screen time.

>Reduce blue light.

>Find a calm place.

>Establish a routine.

>Clear obstacles.

>Secure your location.

>Protect valuables.

>Be clothed.

You can find out more details about these and many other suggestions on the MattressNextDay advice page here.

It's hard for those of us who have never experienced it or been around anyone who has to get our heads around what those who suffer from it must experience. If you do, we hope you are managing and seeking whatever treatments might be available.
