An Open Letter: Missoula’s Outdoor Community Is Unlike Anywhere Else in Montana

Dear outdoor adventurers in Missoula, my hat's off to you. 

Evolution of Outdoor Activities in Missoula

There was a time when Missoula didn’t have a skatepark or a permanent wave for surfing. Sure, you could ski at Snowbowl or try to skateboard around town. But it wasn’t as easy as it is today.   

For years, there have been hang gliders launching from the top of Mount Sentinel. I remember being at the Missoula Fairgrounds with my mom, and she was always amazed watching them slowly float down toward the University of Montana Golf Course.

Equipment has evolved over the years, and today you'll often see newer styles of gliders launching from Mount Sentinel, and it's still one of those sights that makes me stop and look up. 

The Thrill of Surfing: Brennan's Wave

These days, there are even more ways for people to get outside and be adventurous. We've got surfers riding Brennan's Wave. Honestly, who would've thought surfing would become such a big part of Missoula's identity? Yet it's grown into a real community. You see people gathered along the river taking pictures and videos, and the city is even planning a second wave because of how popular it's become.

Then you've got the skateboarders at MOBASH. It brings back memories of when I was a little more adventurous than I am today.

Let's not forget the whitewater rafters tackling the Alberton Gorge. That's an adventure all by itself.

The Unique Charm of Missoula

You're part of what makes this place so special. 

It's always a great day when I look up, see someone soaring off Mount Sentinel, catching the thermals, and gently floating into the valley. Or when I see surfers catching waves in the middle of Missoula. Or rafters heading for the Gorge.

Those moments remind me just how unique this place really is. 

So, to all of you adventurous souls, thank you for doing what you do. 

You help make Missoula, Missoula. And you help make Montana, Montana.
