February in Montana can be brutally cold. That’s why this year has been so unusual. Seeing golf courses open at the beginning of February didn't make sense to most of us. Since the beginning of 2026, the weather hasn’t behaved normally at all. There have been multiple record-high temperatures in both January and February.
Why February 2026 Was So Warm in Montana
This weather is making people very nervous about the upcoming fire season. So far, we have gotten some good news from meteorologists and the Old Farmer’s Almanac for our upcoming spring forecasts. If the forecasts come true, we should be get more precipitation than normal this spring.

To the people who have recently moved to Montana, I can’t stress this enough. This weather is not normal. If you think that winters here aren’t that bad, you will be sadly mistaken.

Normally, this time of year is when cabin fever hits Montanans hard. We’re all looking ahead to spring to do the things we can’t do in the middle of February. We usually see single-digit temperatures and have snow on the ground. Sometimes we see negative temperatures for days at a time. It's the kind of cold where your face hurts and your boogers freeze almost instantly.
