California Is Closing Montana’s Tax Haven For Luxury Cars
Why Luxury Supercars Often Have Montana License Plates
If you have ever traveled outside Montana and spotted a really fancy supercar with Montana plates, there is a good chance the car, and the person driving it, are not actually from Montana.
For years, Montana has been seen as a tax haven for owners of exotic or high-end cars. But that situation might be starting to change.

The Montana Vehicle Registration Loophole Explained
Authorities in California recently charged 14 individuals for failing to report about $20 million in luxury car sales. According to investigators, that led to roughly $1.8 million in unpaid taxes.
The issue centers around a legal loophole involving vehicle registrations in Montana. Because Montana does not charge sales tax, some owners create Montana-based LLCs to register their expensive vehicles here. The cars, however, never actually come to the state.
Officials say that unpaid tax money could have gone toward things like public roads, schools, and other services people rely on.
And California is not the only place looking into it. Utah has also investigated vehicles registered in Montana but primarily driven elsewhere.
The Multi Million Dollar Supercars Involved In The Case
Some of the cars mentioned in the case are incredibly expensive, including a $1.8 million McLaren Elva, a $1.5 million Porsche 918 Spyder, and a $1.26 million Ferrari F12tdf.
Prosecutors say many of these vehicles were never shipped to Montana and were instead kept and driven in California the entire time.
To be clear, Montana itself has not done anything illegal. The issue is with individuals who may have abused the system.
Still, with more states taking notice, do not be surprised if pressure builds to eventually change Montana’s laws.
