Fall is here, and so is my craving for pumpkin spice and horror movies. The fall season always brings out the need for anything macabre. The interest in paranormal investigations skyrockets around the Halloween season. With popular shows like "Ghost Hunters" and "Ghost Adventures," more and more people are searching for answers to paranormal things.

Amateur ghost hunters are everywhere. The Old Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge hosts amateur investigations on a regular basis. With tours of the old prison being offered daily. Garnet Ghost Town and Bannack are other places that are popular for ghost investigations.

Other than obtaining permission to investigate these haunted places, the only other barrier for some is getting the equipment used in most paranormal investigations.

According to American Libraries Magazine

Many libraries begun loaning out collections of specialized electronic items said to help seekers of the supernatural track down spirits. These kits usually consist of a backpack or carrying case filled with items such as a “spirit box,” which scans radio frequencies in hopes of encountering ghostly voices; an electromagnetic field (EMF) meter, on the theory that ghosts can manipulate EMFs; and a recorder for capturing electronic voice phenomena (EVP), aka messages from beyond the veil.

I have been an amateur paranormal investigator for many years. I can tell you that I have experienced some very interesting things along the way. Having the proper equipment and ability to analyze evidence captured is key to any paranormal investigation.

Missoula Public Library is always offering up new "kits" for people to experience. Maybe this fall we can talk them into setting seekers of the paranormal to check out some ghost-hunting gear.
