The Missoula Police Department will be focused on removing impaired drivers from the roads and cracking down on other traffic infractions this weekend. The Super Bowl is this Sunday and additional crews will be out on patrol. Traffic Sergeant Michael Hebert explains.

“If your game day celebration involves alcohol, remember even one drink can impair your judgement,” Hebert said. “If you are planning to be away from home during the Super Bowl, make a game plan in advance to ensure you don't find yourself without a designated driver after the festivities. If you're hosting a party, make sure you take care of your designated drivers by offering non-alcoholic beverages and remind your friends and family to plan for a sober ride home. Remember: Fans don't let fans drive drunk.”

Hebert went on to provide some tips to stay safe while you have fun during the Super Bowl.

“Plan a safe ride home before the celebration,” Hebert said. “Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys before you enjoy an alcoholic beverage. Expect your friends and family to have a sober driver and let them know it. Provide safe transportation for your party guests, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Call 9-1-1 to report a suspected impaired driver. The best defense on the road is wearing a seatbelt.”

Hebert said everyone should buckle up every trip, every time. He said there is no good excuse not to.

“The Missoula Police Department is committed to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Montana’s roadways,” Hebert said. “That is why this Super Bowl weekend the Missoula Police Department will be increasing patrols and making DUI arrests to ensure everyone gets home safely. Everyone can have a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl by simply planning to have a sober ride and buckling up.”

According to MPD, driving while impaired by any substance, alcohol or other drugs, is deadly and illegal.
