EAST HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Officials in Lewis and Clark County say a horse had to be euthanized after falling through the floor boards of a trailer as it traveled through East Helena on U.S. Highway 12.

The Independent Record reports a concerned motorist called officials at 8:45 a.m. Monday. A front-end loader was used to lift the trailer off the horse. No other horses were in the trailer.

A sheriff's deputy says the horse was euthanized by a veterinarian.

The woman who owned the horse would not give her name, but called the horse's death a tragedy.
