HAVRE, Mont. (AP) — The Chouteau County sheriff's office is investigating after a Michigan couple reported being assaulted and left unconscious in the Bear Paw mountains in north-central Montana.

Deputy Dennis Hale tells KOJM-AM in Havre that an area resident picked up the hitchhiking couple on May 6. They say the driver took them to the mountains, beat them up and stole all of their possessions.

Hale says a rancher found the couple at about 5 p.m. on May 7. Both were taken to the hospital in Havre and the man was flown to a Great Falls hospital for treatment of head injuries.

Hale says both have since been released from the hospital and are staying in the area while the case is investigated.
