Getting your first apartment can be a difficult time, especially if you  don’t have the help of friends or family. The University of Montana School of Social Work students are teaming up with the Tom Roy Youth Guidance Home to put together “apartment kits” for youth who are transitioning out of the foster care system and starting off on their own for the first time. They are asking for donations (both new and gently used) of house wares such as: cleaning supplies, blankets, linens, dishware, cookware, shower curtains, towels, clocks and lamps. Gift cards are also welcome for groceries and other items.
Social work student Ashleigh Wilbert  says  these kids face increased hardships and  often don’t have a strong support system to guide them. (That interview is attached below)

The donation drive started on November 14, and will run through December 16, 2011. Drop boxes are located at the Lommasson Center on the U of M campus (between the Food Zoo and the Country Store), The University Villages Community Center, the bookstore and library at The College of Technology Campus, and at both Montana Club locations (on Brooks St. and on Reserve St.)
