Montana’s Newest Congressman Spotlights Tax Policy And Food Security
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - We’ve spoken to Troy Downing many times on the KGVO Talk Back show, but Friday was his first official visit as the newly elected member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Downing began by describing his first House testimony.
“I was honored to be able to testify in front of the Ways and Means Committee, which deals with all the tax policy, and I'm sure you can imagine that's going to be a huge issue as we start to push forward with the Trump priorities and the Trump agenda, making sure that we're renewing all of Trump's tax cuts,” began Downing.
Downing was proud to help push through the Fix Our Forests Act.
“One thing I'm really proud of is that we passed the Fix Our Forests Act that Congressman Westerman of Arkansas brought to the House about a week or so ago,” he said. “It's going to start dealing with some of those risk factors, of dealing with forest management, making sure that we are handling and mitigating the causes or the things that exacerbate the wildfires that we're seeing.”
Downing is Concerned About America's Food Security
“I really see food security as being national security, and I see these pressures on reducing production agricultural land, and we need to make sure we're doing everything to fight that and to support our farmers and ranchers. Because throughout the history humanity, if you want to bring a country down, you just make it so can't feed itself. So I was really honored to be able to testify in support of our farmers and ranchers on that tax policy.”
Wrapping up the 30-minute conversation with Congressman Downing was that he was proud to cast his vote to pass the Laken Riley Act.
Downing Proudly Signed the Laken Riley Act
“Finally, I was proud to cast my vote for the Laken Riley Act, which is completely common sense,” he said. “This is the first bill that President Trump signed into law that basically says, if you're here illegally and you commit a crime, you get deported and you're not given that opportunity to do something like the tragedy that happened with Laken Riley. So I was really happy to vote for that bill, and really happy to see that the President signed it.”
Congressman Downing has committed to appearing on Talk Back on a regular basis to take calls from KGVO listeners.
