The Ravalli County sheriff's office has received the results of DNA testing on human remains discovered last summer in the mountains west of Stevensville, but the sample did not match anyone listed in a national missing person's registry. Mushroom hunters found a partial skull, part of a femur and several smaller pieces of bone last July 5 on the north flank of St. Mary Peak in the Bitterroot National Forest. Sheriff's deputies recovered the remains, as well as some bits of clothing and a water bottle. A boot sole and a label from the jeans indicated the remains were those of a male victim. Sheriff's detective Scott Burlingham tells the Ravalli Republic that the printing on the water bottle leads him to believe the victim died between 2004 and 2009.
