The Governor has vetoed legislation requiring the state to get county approval before transplanting or relocating wild buffalo or bison. In January, fish, wildlife, and parks announced its plan to re-introduce disease-free bison to Montana. The bill's supporters say bison can be dangerous, and county commissioners should be included in the discussion. Governor Brian Schweitzer says Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is designed to manage Montana’s wildlife, and county leaders have other responsibilities.

The legislation would need to get the support of two-thirds of both chambers to over-ride the Governor's veto.
