Watch As Bozeman Standoff Ends Peacefully With Missoula Fugitive in Custody
Early Tuesday morning, a six hour standoff between a Missoula fugitive and Gallatin County authorities ended peacefully with the arrest of 39 year-old Chad Earl Williams.
As KGVO previously reported, Williams was convicted of attempted deliberate homicide in 1996, and was sentenced to 50 years in prison with 25 years suspended, however, Williams allegedly violated the terms of his probation and a $100,000 warrant was issued for his arrest.
Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said the initial call that Williams was holed up in a Bozeman residence and possibly armed, came in at about 3:00 a.m.
"A female called stated she had information that there was a male in Bozeman that was possibly wanted out of Missoula for an arrest warrant," Gootkin said. "Our deputies responded to the residence and we were able to verify through personal contact and also texting that the person was there. That's when we started to attempt to get the people out of the residence."
Gootkin said law enforcement then set up a perimeter around the neighborhood
."We were able to set up a perimeter and were able to get actually five people out of the house while that individual was sleeping," he said. "We were able to actually start talking to him at about 6 o'clock this morning. We had our special response team and our negotiators in our command vehicle communicating with the individual and after about three hours we talked him out."
Gootkin said many of the precautions taken had to do with the possibility that Williams might be armed.
"We had every indication that he was armed, but when we went into the house after he was apprehended, we were unable to find a pistol that we thought that he was carrying," said Gootkin. " He'll face a courtesy arraignment here in Bozeman for a petition to revoke his sentence out of Missoula for attempted deliberate homicide."
Williams should be back in the custody of Missoula authorities before the end of the week.
