88-Year-Old Doctor Still Charges Five Dollars an Appointment
The extent to which health care costs have risen over the last few decades is staggering. But thanks to Dr. Russell Dohner, the 3,500 residents of Rushville, Illinois get their health care at an old-fashioned price.
The 88-year-old, who has been practicing medicine in Rushville with the same nurse for 57 years, still charges five dollars an appointment. And that’s the total cost, not the copay.
Donher, who says the total number of babies he’s delivered in Rushville exceeds the town’s current population, also works seven days a week. And he’s never taken a vacation, which is one of the reasons he is able to to keep his prices so low.
“You know, frankly, I’ve never spent much money for going on trips or stuff like that,” Dr. Dohner explained.
When Dohner started out he was only charging two dollars a visit. That fee rose to five dollars in the seventies, something Dohner almost seems apologetic about.
Dohner became a physician because he was impressed with the doctor who cared for him when he got sick as boy so many years ago. Now, approaching 90, Dohner has no plans to stop inspiring others to get into the medical profession.
“I guess I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t doctoring,” he admitted. Learn more about this unique man of medicine in the video below.
