Pictures and videos of the damage caused by the flooding have been circulating on social media, and many Montanans are in desperate need of help during this time. The Yellowstone River reached historically high levels on Monday, and much of the damage still needs to be accessed. On Monday, the Yellowstone River crested at 51,400 CFS (cubic feet per second), shattering a record of 30,000 CFS that was set in 1918.
It goes without saying that it will take a long time before Montanans recover and heal from this tragedy. Many Montana residents have lost everything. Many roads washed out and bridges were swept away by raging floodwaters.
Watching videos and seeing pictures of the impacts of the flooding in Montana has been absolutely heartbreaking. However, it has been truly inspiring to watch fellow Montanans come to the rescue to help out their neighbors.
Many areas in western Montana are still inaccessible and emergency crews are working around the clock to get supplies where they are needed.
All five entrances to Yellowstone National Park are closed to inbound travel until further notice. On Monday, YNP staff evacuated visitors from the park.
Many rivers in Montana are still extremely high and are considered dangerous. Please keep away from rivers during this time and stay safe.
