Gallatin County authorities say a 74-year-old man has died after a house east of Bozeman exploded and burned to the ground.

County officials said the explosion was felt up to four miles away early Thursday.

Several fire departments responded to Jackson Creek Road just before 1:30 a.m. to find the house on fire and its walls blown out.

Officials fought the fire until it was brought under control at 5 a.m.

County officials say authorities found the body of 74-year-old Jerome Joseph Davis about 8 a.m.

It was not immediately clear how Davis died or what caused the explosion and fire.

The sheriff's office, Bozeman police, the state fire marshal and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
