Am I the only one who has a love-hate relationship with daylight saving time? Apparently the purpose of daylight saving time is to make better use of daylight. What if you’re not a morning person? Then, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of making use of your daylight hours, if you’re sleeping through part of those daylight hours? Don’t get me wrong, the time change isn’t all bad. There is at least one good thing about daylight saving.

The extra hour of sleep I get every year is the best part of daylight saving. If you are a parent with small children, then you realize just how precious sleep is. Even if you’re not a parent of small children, who couldn’t use more sleep? I’m sure there are a few million teenagers out there that enjoyed an extra hour of sleep too. I mean, really, who couldn’t use an extra hour of sleep? If anything, we should increase the extra hour of sleep to once a month, instead of once a year.

The worst part of daylight saving time is the fact that it gets dark earlier. One of the best things about living in Montana is how long the days are in the summer. It doesn’t stay light out until 10 p.m. everywhere. I have spent a summer or two in the south and a few weeks of a summer in New Hampshire. I was surprised when it got dark at 8 p.m. in the middle of summer. It’s very hard for me to adjust to it getting dark outside at 5 p.m., especially since I am a night owl.
