INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Dennis Ryerson will retire as editor of The Indianapolis Star on June 1 after nine years at the position.

The Indianapolis Star reports Publisher Karen Crotchfelt made the announcement during a meeting Monday in the newsroom. Ryerson will take on a part-time role as a columnist and editorial writer.

Ryerson was previously the editorial page editor and vice president of the San Jose Mercury News in California, editor of The Des Moines Register in Iowa and executive editor of the Great Falls Tribune in Montana.

A search has begun for Ryerson's replacement.
