31 year-old Michael Ross appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Friday afternoon and was charged with felony robbery after allegedly holding up the Brooks Street Motor Inn armed with a butcher knife.

According to court documents, the front desk attendant was confronted by a man wielding a butcher knife and gave her a note that read 'give me all the money in the till'. The clerk complied and the suspect left the scene. The knife was later found in the grass by the motel.

Court documents go on to say that a Crimestoppers tip led authorities to Michael Ross, who his girlfriend described as being a 'meth addict desperate for money'.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Shaun Donovan asked substitute Justice of the Peace Gregory Hintz that bail for Ross be set at $25,000.

"That request is based on two factors," Donovan said. "First, the offense, and as you can see by the affidavit, the allegation is that Mr. Ross went into the Brooks Street Inn and threatened the clerk there with a butcher knife and robbed the place. Secondly, at the time he was arrested about 10 days later, there was an outstanding municipal court warrant for $1,500. He has 23 traffic violations and two failures to appear, both in 2014."

Donovan went on to quote Ross' girlfriend in the affidavit.

"This is a direct quote from one of the witnesses, that the defendant was a meth addict desperate for money," Donovan said. "When he was found, he was in possession of a pipe one would use to smoke meth, so all those things together suggest a high bail, and that's why we're asking for $25,000."

Judge Hintz agreed, and Ross was remanded back to the jail on $25,000 bond.

His next court appearance will be December 5.
