As of Saturday May 16, it will officially be fishing season in Montana!

"I think a lot of us don't think about there even being any time of the year where there is a closed season because really you can always go somewhere and fish," Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Public Information Officer Vivica Crowser said. "But there are a few places that are closed for the winter season and those are just small rivers and streams."

Of course, Montana has river fishing and Ice fishing opportunities over the winter, but now is the time to get out and explore the creeks. Here’s a quick description of the types of fishing accessible now.

"The easiest way to look at it is the kind of tributary streams that we think of, for example running down the Bitterroot Valley, kind of everything feeding in from the west side of the valley, those places like Kootenai Creek where it's fun to go catch some fish and wade into the small stream."

Crowser wants to remind people to check the rules and regulations before dropping a line in the water. Speaking of rules and regulations, Montana FWP is still seeking public comment and recommendations on possible changes to fishing regulations for next year.
