Carroll College says its president, Thomas Trebon, has resigned effective immediately because of an urgent health matter.

The Helena college's board of trustees has named dean and senior vice president of academic affairs Paula McNutt as interim president.

Trebon was Carroll's 14th president and had held the post since 2001. His achievements include leading Carroll's centennial celebration and its first comprehensive fundraising campaign, which raised $34 million.

He had originally planned to retire next June after a replacement was named, but his undisclosed health problems forced him to move up the date.

The college says the search for a permanent replacement has been narrowed to three finalists.

McNutt will take over Trebon's duties until a successor is named.

She has been with the college since 2009.
