State officials in Montana say private well owners should not use water from flooded wells before having tests conducted to make sure the water is safe.

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services and the state Department of Environmental Quality on Friday told homeowners to have the wells tested for damage and water tested for contamination.

The agencies warn residents that the well water might look fine but contain coliform bacteria and pollutants such as paint, chemicals, motor oil and pet waste.

The agencies say boiled water can be used for cleaning, but bottled water should be used for drinking and preparing food.
