Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On October 6, 2026, the Missoula Police Department was alerted that Steven George-Henry Meile Jr. had absconded from parole supervision and that he had an active warrant for his arrest. An MPD officer reported that Steven is known to be armed and had reportedly made statements that he planned to "shoot it out" with law enforcement rather than return to prison. Officers received information that Steven might be planning to visit Community Hospital. Accordingly, undercover units initiated surveillance at that location.

At approximately 9:52 p.m., an officer observed Steven riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by John Doe. Another officer responded to the hospital in a marked police vehicle. He attempted to effectuate an enforcement stop on John Doe's vehicle, a black Honda Civic.

As the Honda Civic approached the hospital parking lot exit, the officer pulled his patrol vehicle behind the Honda Civic and activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. The officer delayed his enforcement action so that the Honda Civic would travel a sufficient distance away from the hospital, thereby reducing the possibility that Steven could attempt to take a hostage.

Public Safety Concerns Lead to Grappler Deployment

The officer reported that, despite his emergency lights being activated, the Honda Civic continued to travel at approximately 30 MPH. The officer reported that Steven was moving frantically inside the vehicle. As this occurred, it appeared to the officer that Steven was preparing for a fight-or-flight scenario.

As the vehicle continued forward, it approached Reserve Street. The officer was concerned for public safety and believed that Steven might flee from the vehicle, enter an occupied business, and take a hostage. For this reason, the officer decided to deploy his Grappler system to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The Grappler is a department-issued vehicle immobilization device designed to safely capture a target vehicle's rear tires and terminate a pursuit. The officer deployed the Grappler and successfully immobilized the Honda Civic.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, Steven immediately climbed over a tall fence and entered the Larchmont Golf Course. Steven then fled across the golf course on foot. Officers established a containment perimeter in an effort to apprehend him. Utilizing a department-issued drone, officers ultimately took Steven into custody at gunpoint.

Another officer interviewed John Doe. Based upon John Doe's statements, court documents state that probable cause exists to believe Steven solicited, aided, and abetted Doe in committing the offense of obstructing justice. Steven, who was a wanted fugitive and felony parole absconder, informed John Doe that he was wanted and directed him to get him out of the area after the officer activated his emergency lights and siren. By his words and actions, Steven caused John Doe to transport him away from law enforcement officers who were actively attempting to apprehend him.

Steven is currently being charged with felony accountability for obstructing justice, obstructing peace officer, and criminal trespass to property. His bond was set at $100,000.
