Wanted Man Arrested for a 7th DUI in Missoula

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 18, 2026, a Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was informed via dispatch that a 911 caller reported a possible drunk driver. The caller stated that he had given 56-year-old Jason Chiefstick a ride from the Rock Creek Exit of I-90 to the Clinton Market to get gas and then took Chiefstick back to Rock Creek. The caller reported smelling alcohol on Chiefstick and, after dropping Chiefstick off at Rock Creek, observed Chiefstick driving about 40 mph on I-90 in a black truck. 

The caller recontacted 911 at 10:26 AM and said he had just observed Chiefstick’s vehicle parked on the side of I-90 near Poor Henry’s and saw Chiefstick walking on frontage road.  Deputies responded to the area and made contact with Chiefstick. Deputies noted Chiefstick smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage.  

The deputy was informed via dispatch that Chiefstick had a warrant from another county, had a suspended license with a pickup order, a requirement for an interlock device, and was under the supervision of probation and parole.  

Denial and Symptoms: Chiefstick’s Reaction

Chiefstick stated he was heading to Missoula but denied driving. Chiefstick stated his nephews had been driving, but he did not know where his nephews were currently. During this time, the deputy observed Chiefstick was swaying while standing and exhibited slurred speech. 

The deputy asked Chiefstick to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs); Chiefstick agreed, and the deputy observed the following indicators of impairment: 6/6 HGN and VGN present. The deputy instructed Chiefstick on the walk and turn, and Chiefstick stated he could not complete the maneuver due to a previous surgery. Chiefstick was also unable to complete the one-leg stand, however, during the time he was able to engage in the maneuver, the deputy observed 2/4 indicators of impairment.  

The deputy read Chiefstick the PAST Advisory and requested a breath sample, to which Chiefstick refused. Chiefstick was placed under arrest and was read the Implied Consent Advisory. The deputy requested a breath sample, and Chiefstick again refused.

Probation Protocols: A Compliance Check

During the search incident to arrest, the deputy located the keys to Chiefstick’s Ford vehicle. The deputy then contacted the on-call probation officer, who requested a search of Chiefstick’s vehicle on behalf of probation. The deputy observed through the windows several alcohol containers in plain view. 

The deputy applied for and was granted a search warrant for Chiefstick’s blood. Then the deputy transported Chiefstick to St. Patrick Hospital, where a blood draw was conducted. Then Chiefstick was transported to the Missoula County Detention Facility.

He is currently being charged with felony DUI, driving with a suspended or revoked license, and restricted person operating without ignition interlock. The deputy noted that Chiefstick had at least six prior DUI convictions, as well as previous driving while suspended/revoked convictions. His bond was set at $50,000.
