Vehicle Break-ins Rise in Missoula, MPD Offers Prevention Tips

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 10, 2026, the Missoula Police Department reminded community members to take a few simple precautions following recent reports of criminal trespass to motor vehicles. 

According to MPD, vehicle break-ins are often crimes of opportunity. They say taking a few extra moments when you park can help reduce your chances of becoming a victim. 

Tips to Prevent Break-ins 

• Lock your vehicle every time you leave it, even if you are only stepping away for a few minutes.

• Remove valuables from your vehicle. Wallets, purses, electronics, firearms, cash, keys, and other valuable items should never be left inside an unattended vehicle.

• Keep belongings out of sight. Bags, backpacks, shopping bags, and even items that may not contain anything valuable can attract attention. If you must leave something in your vehicle, secure it in the trunk or out of view before arriving at your destination. 

• Never leave your keys or key fob inside your vehicle. This includes spare keys!!!!

• Park in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible.

• Close all windows and secure doors, trunks, and tailgates before walking away.

• Avoid leaving garage door openers in vehicles parked outside.A garage door opener, combined with information inside your vehicle showing your home address, can potentially provide access to your residence.

If you see someone checking vehicle door handles, looking into multiple vehicles, or engaging in other suspicious behavior, please report it. For crimes in progress or emergencies, call 911. 

MPD says a locked vehicle with nothing visible inside is a much less attractive target, and small habits can make a big difference in preventing crimes of opportunity.
